SHORTAGE OF PROVISIONS.
AN INCIDENT OF THE SEA. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.; [United Press Association,] > (Received 8.55 a.m.) Sydney, March 14. The American barque Afonlaw reports that when off Pitcairn Island, two boats containing thirty-four islanders came aboard and reported that they wore short of bread and other . commodities. They obtained a supply and also clothing in exchange for poultry, vegetables, and fruit. The islanders reported “all well.” A gale recently destroyed the plantations some time ago, but they are now recovering from the effects.
Pitcairn Island, situated in the Western Pacific, has an area of two square miles. The population number 169, the affairs being administered by a Chief Magistrate and Council. Arrowroot and coffee of excellent quality are produced.
