Richardson, who appeared at Bow Street weak from hunger-striking, said she had been an art student, but cared more for justice than for art. The nation was either dead or asleep. Women vainly knocked at the doors of Ministers, Archbishops, and even of the King. Nora Smyth, sculptor, was fined £ls for striking a police sergeant on the neck with a drum stick during the demonstration in Bow Street. Suffragettes deputationised the Glasgow magistrates, and protested against, the policies of brutal treatment of. Mrs Pankhurst. Magistrates ordered the chief constable to submit a report. Helen Crawford was sentenced to 30 days for smashing the army recruiting office windows at Glasgow. A mansion at Stewarton was fired by suffragettes. "Both these acts were protests against Mrs Pankhurst's arrest.

There is a widespread demand for more severity towards militants. Some letters were appearing, suggesting that they be allowed to starve. A Magistrate commented on the anomaly of the maximum punishment being six months for damaging works of art. and eighteen for smashing windows.
