FIRE BRIGADE FETE.
AN AUSPICIOUS OPENING. Soon after eleven o'clock this morning a procession in connection with the Fire Brigade's Carnival and Garden Fete left Mr Newton King's corner and proceeded to the Showgrounds.. It was headed by the Stratford Municipal Band, followed by the present fire engine and the hist engine, and the Boy Scouts, under Scoutmaster Kimberley. The procession also included a number of vehicles which had been entered in the decorated classes and a number of miscellaneous vehic l les. Brigadesmen and/helpers had been in attendance at the ground since 0 a.m., and when the crowd began to arrive at about noon everything was in good order. The various stalls were tastefully decorated and "the fairy well" fully deserved"'its name. The cocoanut shy and barrel-riding apparatus was also got into working order. All the members of the Brigade were in attendance and each found a good deal of work to do. A great number of entries for the class for doll's decorated perambulator were on the ground and displayed much taste in decoration. A number of small lads made themselves conspicuous by appearing with faces covered with burnt cork and otherwise disguised as idle and disorderly persons. Another disguised person wore something like a smock and something like a Ned Kelly helmet and paraded with the A. and P. Association's Gymkhana prominently mentioned in big letters on his person. The cocoanut-shy was a popular item, and a fair number of the nuts were knocked over and claimed by straight-eyed competitors. Children's races were held during the morning, some close finishes being witnessed. A apple-bobbing for cyclists proved a good race, though the winner, getting his apple quickly, established a good lead, which he retained to the finish. Competitors had to cycle a distance, catch an apple from a tub, carry jt in the mouth for a distance and end up with- running to the tape.
