Stannard, an employee in a foundry, who shot the manager Smith in his office on December 4, was found not guilty of murdering Smith. He was found to he insane, and was ordered fo bo detained in an asylum.
DIVORCE, DESERTION, DEATH

Details of a double tragedy which occurred on February 6 at Honolulu show that some two years ago a Sydney resident obtained a divorce from his wife, who was well known in fashionable circles, on the ground of adultery. Shortly after, the wife of another resident was granted a divorce on the ground of her husband’s misconduct with the divorced wife mentioned above. Meantime the two divorcees departed to San Francisco in company, i A year later, the lady transferred her affections to another
gentleman.- They sailed for Sydney and were married shortly before reach, ing Honolulu, where they stayed to spend the honeymoon. The man who had been deserted in America then appeared on the scene and shot and mortally wounded his deserter, who was then known as Mrs Stuart. He then turned the weapon on himself with fatal effect.

manufacturers and members of Parliament waited on the Hon. J. H. Cann, Minister for Agriculture, and urged him to strenuously oppose th • introduction of colored matter into margarine. Nobody, they said, objected to the sale of margarine as such, but it should not be sold as butter. They wanted fair competition, but coloring matter was introduced for an illegitimate purpose. Mr Cann said the present regulation was a good one, and he had heard nothing to make him interfere. He assured them it would remain intact.
