RETURNS FOR TEN MONTHS
A REMARKABLE POSITION. Traffic returns and a few particulars of revenue and expenditure in the New Zealand Railways for the toil months April 1, 1913, to January 31, 1 1914, are published in the Gazette just issued. Tito total revenue of the North Island main lines and branches is shown as i 4 ,304,360, and the expenditure at £1.300,440. For the South Island mail- lines and branches the figures wen- - —Revenue,'£l,479,26l ; expenditure £1,105,321. The grand total of rot/onuc for all lines was £3,283,021. as compared with £3,284,271 for the corn- minding period of last year, and the eviKMuliture, £2,405, 1 01 as compared vith £2,247,050 for the same period -»f last year. This means that the rev-nue has fallen £651, and that the expenditure has increased £158,111.
A comparative statement of the traffic on nl sections for the periods ending January 31, 1913 and 1911, shows that there has been an increase this year of 346,824 in the number of tickets issuec and a general increase in the ammo tof live stock. r l he freight business shows almost a general decline. The amount of wool carried shows a decline of 11,310 tons; timber. 34,965 cons; grain, 134,058 tons; and minerals, 27<,592 tons.
The total ct -st of opened linos to date is £31,0 *1,220, and unopened lines £2,22(UFi3.
