HIS MAJESTY’S PICTURES.
The new programme presented last night at Bernard’s Theatre proved to be a magnificent series. The leading feature film by the Vitagraph players “Prince of Evil,” is the best 3000 ft. drama yet turned out .by the famous actors. “The Topical Budget” and the latest Pathe Gazette introduce a great number of topical doings of the moment. The leading English and Continental fashions were extremely interesting to the ladies. “Seeds of Wealth” is a Lubin photo play, and the “Iron and Steel Industry” is educational, while there is a full programme of clever dramatic, scenic and comic hits. To-night will be the final screening of this fine series. On Monday the famous Pathe color star drama, “A Fatal Love,” which is an emotional electrifying story of the French aristocracy, will be released. The opening scene shows the lovely gardens of the Duchess Carelli, whose daughter, Regina, is being painted by Guido, a celebrated artist. The yong couple fall in love, but their
idyll is spoilt by the Duchess telling her daughter that she must marry Dorsani, a banker, whom she owed a
large sum of money. The girl is heartbroken over the prospects of marrying a man she does not care for, but filial duty prompts her to relinquish her love for the artist. The marriage takes place, and the financial ruin of the Duchess is averted. After the honeymoon the banker Dorsani asks the artist to meet him in a friendly encounter with foils at the fencing display of their club. Both are experts, and they give a wonderful exhibition before the fashionable gathering. The men, however, become gradually worked up to a frenzy. The butt end at the tip of the artists’ foil is nearly bent off during the combat and the artist, now thoroughly angered, breaks off the tip of his foil, leaving a dagger like point. The men cross swords again for the final bout, when, very suddenly, the artist mortally wounds his adversary. TOWN HALL PICTURES. There was another large and enthusiastic audience at the Town Hall last night to witness the well-screen-ed programme. Manufacture Jiji Japa Hats. These hats are made from dry leaves of torqnillo. “Veil of Sleep” is a 1000 ft. drama, showing Louise Gray walking in her sleep, and removing money from her employer’s office. Her lover sees her, and
thinking she is a thief takes the
blame on himself. Louise thinks he is # really guilty. Later, she walks again in her sleep, this time to re-
the stolen money, and her PLweetheart is exonerated. “Prisoners (jf War” is a star picture in itself. Yigron, a civil war veteran, who has saved the life of a Congressman’s daughter, tells her his life story. Yigron fought on the opposite side to his friend, hut when the enemy caught him, Yigron released him, thus losing his position. However, the influence of the girl’s life works wonders. “Beasts of the Jungle” must 1 he seen to be believed. It is a 4000 feet exclusive star picture shown at your own Town Hall Saturday and Monday for the last time. It depicts liVhow Winne, the little daughter of I John Roberts, loses her way in the jungle with her pet elephant. She sees a hut and enters to inquire her whereabouts, and is trapped inside with a tiger. \Then follow some of the most exciting wild-beast episodes it is possible to imagine. The story is too long to be printed in every detail and the picture must be seen to be thoroughly appreciated. “Aviation at Blackpool,” the first picture to be screened this evening, shows the great advancement that has been made in aircraft. WIRTH’S CIRCUS. Wirth Bros.’ Circus, Ltd., described as the “greatest show on earth,” opens in Stratford on Wednesday next for one night only. Each year Wirth’s circus comes along with more beautiful ladies, more captivating finer lions and tigers, more ponderous elephants, 1 and funnier clowns than the last time. This year the spectacle of more than ordinary merit. Yearly 100 performers
comprise the company, and they include Dare Devil Desperado. He dives from a dizzy height, landing on a* crescent shaped chute, travelling at a traffic speed until his body is in an upright position, landing on his feet, turning a somersault and bow-
ing to his astonished and amazed audience. La Belle Victoria, the beauty of the circus world, and the acknowledged queen of wire artists, gives a performance on the tight and slack wires that is nothing short of wonderful. the Flying Cadouas, the original Nelson Family of nine members, the crack American acrobat combination, the Bastion Family, also of nine members, a wonderful French troupe of acrobats, the Hobson sisters, America’s wire walking prodigies, the Stair Sisters, contortionists and gymnasts, Doblados’ performing, sheep and pigs, the only act of its kind in the world, and a group of a dozen pure white Polar bears, assisted by two grizzlies and a pair of splendid hoar hounds exhibit an intelligence that is simply astounding. The menagerie will he open from 1 to 5 p.m., and which also contains the only hippopotamus and a large mandrill in Australasia.
