Sir Arthur Stanley, the new Governor of Victoria, has arrived at Melbourne. The Rev. Colwell has been elected president of the New South Wales Methodist Conference. Mr T. C. Fookes has tendered his resignation to the School Committee in view of his coming visit to England. ' It was decided to write to Mr Fookes, wishing him a pleasant voyage and a quick recovery. Mr Harry Wheeler, son of Mr John Wheeler, died at his home at Durham Road, Inglewood, at 6 o’clock this morning. Deceased was a well-known and popular settler and died in the prime of life, being only about thirty years of age. Master Thomas Partridge, an old Stratford School boy, son of Mr T. Partridge, has received word that he has passed his examination for his B.A. degree. For the past two years Master Partridge has been studying at the Auckland University College. The Hon. Mr Massey, accompanied by Mrs and Miss Massey, left Hastings for Wellington this morning. The Hon. F. M. If. Fisher and Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P., proceeded to Wairoa. A Press Association message states that Mr Fisher arrives in Wellington at 7.30 a.m. on Saturday, on which day a full meeting of Cabinet is to be held. Messrs Brown and Mackay, former representatives of the North Riding on the Stratford county Council, were paid a compliment by Mr Hathaway at Midhirst yesterday. In pointing a moral, Mr Hathaway warned the North Riding ratepayers that they would not a]wavs have representatives like the gentlemen named had been. The views he wa's expressing, he said, might not be popular, but he was prepared at any time to go out of public life. He had been in public life for nearly twenty-five years, but he was now a good deal poorer than when he entered it.
