BOWLING. THE AUSTRALIANS' TOUR. [P«a Pees» Association.] Timaru, February 15. The Australian bowlers halted here between the expresses on the May to Dunedin and were official iy welcomed. They played a match ou the Timaru green, the local team winning by 119 to 131. SWIMMING. A RECORD FOR LONCWORTH. Dunedin, February 16. i The Australian bowlers Were accorded a civic reception at the Town Hall this morning, after which they were taken for a trip by tram round the city. In the afternoon, a sevenTin k match of 25 heads, Australia v. Otago, was played, Otago winning 185 point to 100. Sydney, February' 15. The three-miles handicap for the president's cup resulted:—Cotton I, Beech 2, Longworth 3. Time, 74min 20sec. Longworth broke his own record put up in 1912 by fourteen seconds. THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Blenheim, February 16. The New Zealand amateur swimming championships opened here this evening, under ideal conditions. The results are as follow: 100yds Championship (holder, M. E. Champion, Auckland).—-First heat: M. E. Champion 1, Atkinson 2, Annand 3. Also started: Fordham. Time,.62 l-ssec. Second Heat: Jered 1, Sinton 2 ; Cookson 3. Also started: Pfankuch, Stevens, and Emerson. Final: Champion (Auckland) 1, Atkinson (Opawa), 2, Sinton (Waitemata) 3. It was Champion's race all through, although there was not much between him and Atkinson. The time, 61 4-ssec, is a New Zealand record.
Mile Championship (holder, M. E. Champion, Auckland).—M. E. Champion (Auckland), 1, L. Hill (Canterbury), 2. Also started: Sinton, Nowman, and Rich. The placed men wore the only ones to finish. Champion won easily by three lengths of the baths. Time, 25min 57sec. Water Polo (holders, Canterbury). —First Round: Canterbury A beat Blenheim and Nelson, by eight goals to nil." HIGH STAKES DEPRECATED. London, February 16. Walter Bradford Woodgate, examateur champion, in a letter to The Field, advances strong reasons why high stakes between Britons should be deprecated. He declares that they tend to deter rising talent and limit the reserve of British aspirants for championships.. Barry is placing himself and British sculling in a false position if he insists on high stakes. It would be more dignified, sportsmanlike, and politic if, after racing Paddon, he met Albany for £2OO aside.
