The Cost of Living.

STATE BAKERY IN N.S.W.

BREAD AT 1d PER LB. [By Electric Telegraph —Copyright" l [United Press Association.] (Received 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, February "• The Minister of justice (Mr Hall) announces that the Government is starting a State bakery to supply the Government's institutions. , With the steadily increasing cost of living, <ays Mr Hall, the Government found itself having to pay more each year to keep up the institutions in question, and keeping down the cost was fast becoming acute. Tenders for bread this year showed an increase of twenty-eight per cent, compared to last year.

Mr Hall said he was convinced there was no real justification for this imemnse increase. To support the contention that a ring existed among the bakers, he stated that the Government refused to accept the lowest tenders, and called for fresh ones which showed a large drop, the bakers apparently having guessed that inquiries were afoot to start a Government establishment. After oarefid consideration, the Government had purchased an up-to-date bakery at Stanmore, and will

start baking for their own institutions in February.

They expect to produce bread at Id per lb.
