The jury was absent an hour in the Liverpoohmurder case. Sumner, whose real name is George Ball, was found guilty of murder, and Eltoft, an accessory after the fact, was recommended to mercy owing to youth, having been influenced by Sumner. The latter, who was sentenced to death, was quite unmoved, and Eltoft was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. (Received 11.30 a.m.) London, February 5.
The Privy Council has reserved judgment in the appefil of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of America versus Reed, of New Zealand. The case was before the Wellington Appeal Court in August and October, 19.12.
