After the fire at the Salvation A> my Industrial Home for Women at Taringa, a married woman named
Martingale, an inmate of the bom?, uirrendered to the police and confessed that she had started the fire, and had thrice previously attempted i;o burn the home. There were 32 inmates.
The fire had a strong hold when discovered. Excepting the Army staff, who were cool and rendered assistance, the women were in a state of
panic. A number on the upper storey were '•ut off by the flames, and jumped from the balcony, six receiving in-
limes. Three lives were Inst. A girl named Deqber was burned to death. Mrs Halburn was shockingly burn:d. Mrs Manzel was injured by jumping from a balcony and succumbed.
