KiXEMATOGRAPH PUBLICATION
The Invercargill correspondent of the Otago Daily Times writes: The fact that a certain topical budget exhibited at a local picture thcatro a week or two ago contained a statea, sporting picture, of the odds at which a certain horse started, raised the question of whether any breach of the Gaming Act was committed by such exhibition. The section of the Act which it was thought to circumvent was that which provides that every person is liable to a fine not exceeding £2O who prints, publishes, sells, or publicly exhibits, any newspaper, or other document, which contains any statement as to the dividend paid or investments on the totalisator in respect to any horse race, or as to the starting price in respect to any such race or any statement from which the amount of such dividend or starting price might be calculated." '
A hypothetical case was stated to a police official, and in reply to the reporter's query he stated that it appeared to be a question of whether a photograph was a document. Ho could not see that; it was, nor did he know of any definition of the word which made
t possible to include a photograph A-ithin its meaning. The reporter ask->d-whether anything, could be done lo restrain proprietors of moving pic:,ures from making the publication of starting prices in New Zealand, Australia, or elsewhere a practice. In reply, it was stated that in the event of such a practice becoming general it would be necessary to legislate prohi-
iting it
