TRADES HALL ARRESTEES IN THE COURT. THE CHARGES DISMISSED. AN IMPRUDENT OFFICER. (Received 11.15 a.m.) Johannesburg, January 21. The decision to caK off the general strike is confirmed. Five of those arrested at the Trade;. Rail were charged with resisting and obstructing the police during the attempted raid on the 14th. Detective Meßride gave evidence that the door was slammed and bolted in his face. A man inside pointed a revolver through the glass panel, and ordered him to clear out.
Counsel for accused argued that the police should have "asked for admission in the name of the King. The Public Prosecutor admitted that this was not done, but thought it- was clear that the occupants resisted the police. The Magistrate dismissed accused, saying that Meßride clearly meant to enter without saying who lie was. Nevertheless the occupants had behaved foolishly, and he advised them to return to work.
