OUR HINTERLAND.
SOME MORE DISCUSSION. THE MAIL AND THE PICNIC. Our back country received further treatment at last night's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. TELEPHONE EXTENSION. Regard hip; the mail and telephone service from Tahora to Tatu, Mr Richards said that it appeared to him that the Department misunderstood the position ; but it was hardly believable that they could misunderstand the matter ill view of the Chamber's letter covering the question forwarded to the Department. The Department said a metallic, circuit was necessary, but he could not see for what reason. Tf the service was extended as desired, Stratford residents could get messages through, though probably at some inconvenience. Mr Kennedy said at his place there was a single private wire, and they could get messages through to Stratford with a little delay. The cos! of this line was no more than £3 per mile. The extension the Chamber asked for —Tahora to Tatu—which was a distance of about 20 miles could easily be constructed at £•"> per mile at the utmost. On Mr Hewitt's motion, it was decided to write again to the Department on the matter. THE MAIL SERVICE. It was decided to take no further action regarding the extension of the mail service until after the Chamber's picnic to the Ohura county. PARTY FROM NEW PLYMOUTH. The Chairman reported that he had been notified that a party from the Xew Plymouth Chamber intended to leave for Ohura on next Sunday, the local body being asked to co-operate. They intended to go up the coast and ride through via Rotate. Mr Jackson thought it would be better for the Chambers to act separately. Mr Richards said that on the whole he rather favored co-operation. The interests of Stratford and Xew Plymouth were practically identical. The Stratford party would, of course, go out via Whangamomona. He would like to see the whole bf the Taranaki towns represented on the trip, but the notice from New Plymouth was too short.
On the motion of Mr E. Jackson, seconded by Mr Kennedy, it was decided to notify the New Plymouth Chamber that the Stratford Chamber could not fall in with the idea. DATE OF THE PICNIC. In fixing the date of the Olmra picnic the Chamber had to avoid clashinn; with various race meetings, the Toko Show, and the Fire Brigade carnival.—lt was finally decided that a start be made on February 19th. 4
Messrs Jackson, Kennedy and Young were appointed a committee (with power to add) to arrange matters in connection with the picnic. The Chairman said the party would arrive back in Whangamomona on Monday, whence motW cars would probably bring the party back to Stratford. BOROUGH TO BE REPRESENTED. The Town Clerk wrote that it was the intention of the Borough Council to be represented on the trip through the Ohura County.
