BOWLING.

THE STRATiFORib CLUB.

(By P. Steward.)

Young and Ted. Jackson (s) put up I a great fight in defence of the Feathers, but had to go under by a point to Staples and McMillan (s). The game was played on Saturday evening. At the tenth head the score was 10 all, and with one head to go 17 all was called. Staples lay a beauty when the skips went back to play, but the bead !was disturbed and Mac had to get there', and he did. Jackson was unable to alter the position, which ho endeavoured to do with a couple of fast ones, failing by “sheets of paper” only. After the present round of Buttons finishes to-morrow (Tuesday) night, the system is to be abandoned. While it was anticipated generally that the system would be highly successful—and it promised so for a time—a difficulty arose so often in obtaining a full rink from the members of each section present that no other course was open to 'the committee but to try another style for competition. This was accelerated by the decision to play eight sections instead of six as at first decided upon. It is to be hoped that interest in the competition will not fail with the reversion to the old order of challenges, which after Tuesday‘will be in vogue. However, if it does not do for the Buttons all that was originally intended, the now conditions will allow of the championship games and the Feathers being played in something like decent time before the end of the season.

Considerable interest is being manifested in the forthcoming tournament at New Plymouth by members of the rinks entered, and with the object of giving them a chance to play together it has been suggested that some arrangement towards this consummation should be devised in the only too short interval between the finishing of the Buttons and the opening of the tournament.

Six rinks of bowlers from the New Plymouh Club will play on the local green on Thursday next.
