Many fishing schooners were wrecked off the Massaehussots coast. The loss of life is light.
While the cold was at its most intense in New York four fires broke out in the poorer quarters and a thousand persons are homeless. Tho firemen were unable to cope with the outbreak at first owing to the water freezing. The burned runis present an extraordinary spectacle, icicles hanging from the charred beams and rafters.
