The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 1914. IMPORTS AND EXPORTS.

From the interesting diagrams and carefully completed statistics which one may find in the New Zealand Sear Rook a lot may be learned regarding the exports and imports of the Dominion. In 1892 the total value of the exports from the Dominion was £'9,365,868. In 1912 the value had increased to £21,272,405. A similar decided improvement is shown in the imports, which rose from £6,260,525 in LB9O to £20,967,574 in 1912. In 1892 wool constituted-over 46 per cent, of the total exports, while meats produced 11 per cent., agricultural produce 11, gold 10, butter and cheese only 3.40 per cent. Wool still maintains its position as the principal article of export, but the remarkable increase in the export of dairy produce and the great attention now being paid to that industry, naturally give good grounds to suppose it will not bo many years before the value of our butter and cheese for export will probably exceed the returns for what now constitutes New Zealand's staple article of produce. Better methods and the increase of dairy-farming which naturally follows on the cutting up of largo estates are the chief reasons to anticipate the change". Wool has fallen from 4G.05 per cent, of our total exports in 1892 to 33.40, and the combined tally of meats.and butter and cheese to-day is 36.78, as against 15.46 in 1892.
