THE PANAMA CANAL.

TREATY NEGOTIATIONS. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] (Received 9.20 a.m.) Washington, January 11. Colombia is negotiating a treaty with the United States for a settlement of outstanding questions arising over the separation of the Isthmus and Panama, whereby the United States secured concessions to build the Panama Canal. The Colombian Minister at Washington declared that financial considerations came second. What Colombia wanted was the same rights to use the Canal as United .States, and also the recognition of Colombian delimitation on the Panama frontier.

It is reported that Colombia demands five million sterling as an indemnity.

FIRST THROUGH TRIP.

In connection with the inaugural ceremony of the Panama Canal, the old French screw steamer, Alexandre Penally, started from the Atlantic makjng various stops en route, helped to clear small landslips, and proceeded through the locks to the Pacific.
