MISS DOROTHEA McVANE.
AN ALLEGED SPY. [BY Electric Telegraph—Copyrighi-] [United Press Association.] (Received 9.45 a.m.) Rome, December 28. Miss Dorothea McVane, daughter of Professor McVane, of Harvard, who is singing in grand opera at Taranto, is suspected of espionage because she accidentally snap-shotted masked batteries. Despite the -American Ambassador's assurance that she is not a spy, .the police continue surveillance and threaten to arrest her if she leaves Italy. Miss Dorothea attributes the persecution to a naval officer having fallen in love with her, and when she refused him he denounced her to the authorities.
