♦ _ The Banlcs carrying on business in Stratford will observe Friday, January 2nd as a special Bank holiday. Drivers of vehicles to the racecourse on race days are notified to adhere to routes advertised by the Borough Council.

The Railway Department advertise! train arrangements in connection with the New Year holidays,, the local! races on January Ist and 2nd, Gala Hay at New Plymouth, and Waitotara Show on New Year's Day. At a wedding of Henry Aubrey ', an ex-servant of the Royal Household, at Seamer, near Scarborough, the old custom was observed of breaking a plate over the head of the bride on entering the church. A dance will bo held in the Midhirst Town Hall on Thursday, January Ist. The two essentials for a good night's enjoyment—floor and music—can be depended upon. The south mail train to-day was agaii: a long one and was crowded with passengers, many, no doubt, being trippers from south 'returning home. A large number of Stratford people joined the train, here. The railway staff report that business throughout the holiday season has been verv brisk.

Mr J. «1. Council, of Eltham, was one of those who wont to Wellington on special police-duty. On the fifth of November there was a skirmish in Viyian street, and Mr Cower was struck on the head with a stone. After he skirmish was over he fainted and had to he carried in to the barracks. Mr Conned and others carried him, and then there met together .Mi" Council, Inspector Hendry, Sub-Inspector Sheeltati, and Colonel Newel]. The incident was a curious one (states the Argue' for when these four had last met it was on the occasion of the entry into Parihaka, and that also was on -the-'sth of November, hut 31 years ago. Mrs R. J. Seddon, who presented a cup for competition among the crew of H.M.S. New Zealand, has just received the following letter from Cap tain Hajaey, written on November 13th' when the warship was at Bermuda:—"Dear Mrs Seddon.—l fed that you would like to hear that your cup was competed for whilst at Jamaica last week, and, aftw a splendid race, was won by the crew formed of the Royal Marines, who are therefore the holders for the year. lam sure the cup will be a means of creating a spirit of emulaiton in the shin and thereby improve the boatpulling, and on behalf of all on board 1 wish to thank you again for your gift.—Believe me, yours sincere] v •(Signed) L.
