(Received 8 a.m.) Rome, December 18
Cardinal Rampolla was indisposed all day on Tuesday, but refused to allow his secretary to pass the night in his room. He grew worse later in the night, and his servant was hurriedly despatched for a doctor. Cardinal Merry l)e Val suggested postponing the news to the Pope until next day, fearing the result of the shock.
Despite precautions, .however, the Pope heard Cardinal Rampolla's name coupled with remarks about his indis-
position. The Pope first was unable to believe that he was dead, having seen him on Saturday apparently in his usual health.
