OBITUARY.

ALFRED SAMUEL HOBBS.

Friends will be sorry to learn of the death of Mr Alfred Samuel Hobbs, who passed away this morning about 7.30 o'clock, "at the residence of hi* son, Mr J. H. Hobbs, Warwick Road. The deceased, who was a native of Swanport, Tasmania, was born in 1831, and as a young man decided to come to New Zealand, arriving in Otago in 1851, and remaining there for about two years. Family affairs necessitated his returning to Australia, where he remained and engaged in farming pursuits in South Australia and Victoria until 1877, when he decided to again try his fortunes in Xew Zealand. Arriving at Hawera in 1877, Mr Hobbs took up a native lease at Meremere, which lie occupied until bis term expired. He then retired from active work, and resided at KapOnga, until some five years ago, when he removed to Stratford, where he has since been living with his son. In 1863, Mr Hobbs was united in matrimony to Miss Low, of Richmond, Tasmania, who predeceased him by only thirteen months: The late Mr Hobbs leaves a family of six daughters and three sons—Mrs l>. Wilson (Eltham), Mrs W. Caverhill (Eltham), Mrs 6. Wilson (Papakura), Mrs A. Babbage (Kawhai), Mrs A. Allhusen (Kaponga), and Miss Hobbs, Messrs Harry Hobbs (Stratford), Jack Hobbs (Eltham), and George Hobbs (Inglewood). The interment will take place to-morrow afternoon at Hawera. where the late Mrs Hobbs is buried and also their youngest son, Alfred, who, it will be remembered, was killed about sixmonths ago in a motor accident near Hawera. Deceased was widely esteemed and respected, and until of late years when ill-health incapacitated him, took a keen and active interest in local affairs and in the welfare of all with whom he came in contact.
