I Dr. George Keith, of Glasgow, has [been elected Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland.
1 The late J. C. Williamson's Victorian I estate is valued at £68,663, states a [Melbourne cablegram.. j Mr W. Waters, Government road 'overseer, has been transferred from Kvaverley to Eltham. Mr Waters has taken up bis residence at Eltham.
Dr. W. Anderson, who practised his profession in Blenheim some years ago, idled recently at Thursday Island, where he was acting as medical superintendent.
The engagement is announced of Miss Annie Rothery, only daughter of Mrs N. Rothery, of Rahofu, to Mr A. F. Riddell, of the Post Office staff, Whangamomona.
Mr F. W. Furkett, A.M.1.C.E., inspecting engineer for the Public Works Department, returned by the Niagara after a lengthy visit to England and the Continent and Canada.
Mr Charles Stoddart, the wellknown English sportsman, who has visited the Dominion pretty regularly for some years past, is once more in New Zealand. He has gone north to fish for king-fish at Russell, in companv with Mr A. D. Campbell.
The death occurred this morning of Mr John Pascoe, at the residence of bis son-in-law, Mr C. Jago, of Flint Road. Deceased had reached the age of 74: The interment takes plan on Sunday afternoon at Midhirst cemetery. The Hon. G. Fowlds will leave Auck land early next month on an extended holiday tour, during, which he wiP be accompanied by Miss May Fowlds He will journey to England by the Suez route, and will travel in the Unit ed Kingdom and on the Continent, re turning through the United States o' America. He will be absent about eight months.
Mr W. A. Ballantyne (Chief Inspector of Schools), and Mr W. L. Kennedy (chief of the Scottish Society), examiners of the essays on "The Life and Times of Sir William Wallace," have awarded first prizes to Miss Coral Barnes ("Heather"), second prize It Miss Ida Thomas ("Scotch Thistle"), both of the West End School, New Plymouth. The third prize goes to "Thrush," of the Omata School.
Mr C. J. McKenzie has received notice of transfer\to the head office of the Public Works Department in Wellington. For some years Mr McKenzie was resident engineer in Stratford, hut for some months he has been in Wellington relieving during the ab sence of Mr F. W. Furkert from New Zealand. Mr G. T. Murray, who hap been acting as resident engineer during Mr McKenzie's absence, has now' re ceived notice of his appointment to the position of resident engineer in Stratford.
The King of Roumania belongs tr the senior branch of the Hohenzollern clan. The Kaiser, whatever his posi tion in Europe, is merely the head of the junior branch. The two brancher are descended from Frederick. Count of Zollern, who died about 1200, and the Sigmaringen family to which King Carol belongs descends from Count Frederick's son. In 1905 Prince William, Burgrave of Hohenzollern, succeeded bis father in the high-sounding-title of "Suoreme Chief of all the House of Hohenzollern." He is King Carol's.nephew, but renounced the succession to the Roumanian Throne in 1886. • - *
