STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was held yesterday. Present: Crs. Hathaway (chairman), J. Young, J. Smith, W. Hi Were, E. Anderson, E. Walter and J. Thomson.—Cr. Rogers wrote apologising for absence.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr E. C. Robinson) reported: Work in hand: The re-deck-ing of Kahouri bridge, Mountain Road, has been completed, and the renewal of Wingrove Road bridge will be put in hand forthwith. Crushing operations arc nearing completion at the Mangaqui site, there being only a small amount to supply to York, .Denbigh and Kaipoi Roads. The Borough roller has almost completed life rolling of metal on Salisbury Road, after which I propose to scarify and roll some small portions of. Mountain Road. The Borough then require the roller for their own work. The Comity roller has rolled in the Gordon road re-metal-ting, scarified and rolled the Ohiira Hoad from Toko to Sa'ngster’s Hill and will continue from top of hill towards Stratford. I have arranged for a man to build the foot suspension bridge over.fthe Patea River at Toko and am obtaining the cables from Tututawa. The Puniwhakau Road slipped away partially at- a" point about three miles above Puniwhakau, I have inspected the .piac& and instructed the foreman re carrying out the necessary repairs The Malawi Road improvement work will he put'in hand as soon as the w eather takes up a little. I have inspected the. Maknri stream below the terminus of ‘la^it 1 year’s cleaning and straightening contract and consider that fhe'stream requires clearing for ftbpnt thirty chains further' to allow' of ;i free flow at the terminus. The very broken wither has greatly hampered all County work during the month; and Caused fhe roads to cut uj) generally, .the whole of the metal necessary for completing the metalling of Mahgaehu Road, together with some maintenance "metaT for Puniwhakau Road has been qua fried. ' South Riding.—General maintenance work has been carried out during the month, and the roads are in fair order, with the exception of /Ejnnerty.jßoad.* which is cutting up, with ' the heavy traffic. We also,put put 50 cul/ic yards on Ohura on/Phurp-Mangaehu Rokd, and 40- on.C'roryn Road. v East Riding,, Huiyoa— The broken weather during the month has caused the unmetalled roads to cut up freely, but no • serious damage /resulted.'. Necessary repairs haVe< been made to Moliakau, and Mpkuri Roads, the latter receiving particular attention. The pipes/ordered.have come to hand and been carted out where required or stacked. Temporary repairs were made to culvert on Moliakau Road and later .on, the timber used will be utilised in renewing surface culverts! near' Kjpre. The goi’se. cutting, on, River has been put in hand and will be completed, without delay. A fairly large culvert on Douglas Road/ near Sir Baker’s, requires renewing. West Riding.—Opunake Road Vo 11. A culvert on; this road has been lengthened, and. theq-erformatipn authorised put in hand, but it has been delayed owing to the broken weather. Omiuake Road N 0,.. 3.—This,road has, 1 S -. ken up rather badly between Rowan Road! and the... factory and requires re-metalling as soon as possible. Mangaehu Riding.—During the month pur„ time has been occupied in clearing slips and water-tables on Puni-i whakau, jilangaphu, Tututawa, and Mangaotuku Roads. The work on sie Taihore saddle is in hand.

GENERAL. The matter of collecting dog tax ’.vas deferred to the .January meeting. R, . G'ilmour, Hniroa, made an offer to purchase the present,) roadman’s tvhare at Hniroa.—Declined, Rates were allotted as follows; North Hiding, main road, Id, side roads lid; South, 1 idj East,, IJd, lid ; West, IJd, IJd ; Mangaehn, 1 .Ul, ljd. The General,Manager or Railways notified that instructions had been given for the clearing of the drains on railway land at Douglas.—Received, G. Calvert, Strathmore, wrote, asking for permission to.encroach with a fence on, East Road, the real boundary being so’ close to the river thgt stock eonid not get from point to point if the fence was put on the correct boun-dary.-—Request granted, work to be done under the Engineer’s supervision and at the applicant’s risk. This enables any future Council to have the fence moved back. The ■ secretary of the Institute of Local Government Engineers ; notified that the annual meeting would he held in Auckland on March 19th, 19U. and expressed the hope that the Council’s Engineer, accompanied by the chairman or another member of the Council, would be present.
