THE TEKOPURU FIRE.
A TOWNSHIP RUINED.

The cause of the-Tekdpuru lire was heated bearings, and the outbreak was discovered by the watchman. The apparatus at the mill was unable to cope with the outbreak', and the Dargaville Fire Brigade qngine was summoned, but owing to the time occupied in doing the nine miles journey it could do no good. The fire had too great a hold, but by means of the engine £BO,OOO of timber was saved. The manager states that all was safe at 5.10 pan., but five minutes later the alarm was given. His estimate of the loss,is £40,000. All the machinery and 'building was totally A large, amount of timber was saved and'it will sell as third class. The fire is still smouldering, but there is no danger. The disaster will mean ruination to .the township of Tekopurn, as it put 100 men out of work; , / ( * '
