CARDINAL RAMPOLLA.
A NOTED DIVINE, AETAT 70
[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright j [United Press Association.] . (Received 9.30 a.m.) Rome, December 17. Cardinal Rampolla died suddenly from agina pectoris, though in illhealth for some time. The Pope is overwhelmed, and has ordered the greatest honours to be shown to Cardinal Rampolla. Hitherto he has been regarded as tlia Pope’s successor.
The late Cardinal Mariano Rampolla, Marquis del lindaro; occupied the positions of Secretary (Of State and ArchPriest of the Vatican Basilica. He was born at Polizzi, Sicily, in 1843. and entered the Papal service in 18" C. He was Counsellor of the Papal Embassy at Madrid 1875, Secretary of rim Propoganda for Oriental Bites 1877, Secretary of Ecclesiastical Affairs J 880, Papal} (Nhmico fat Midrid 1,882 and Cardinal Priest and Secretary of State
