I THE ATHLETIC COMPETITIONS. | . ! The athletic competitions in connection with the Bayly Memorial Scholarship, which was instituted by the .Taranaki Rugby Union to peroor.iate 'the memory of the late A. Bayly, were held on the High School ground, New Plymouth, yesterday afternoon. Interest in the scholarship, which is awarded for athletic as well as scho.-.i-tic powers is spreading, two iCliools being represented for the first time in the contest. In all, some thirteen hoys competed, seven hailing from North Taranaki, and six from schools in South Taranaki under the juri?-. diction of the Wanganui Education Board. The latter hoys were entertained during their stay in New Plymouth by Mr W. H. Moyes at the New Plymouth Higli School. ! Members of the Rugby Union present were Mesrs Jas. McLeod (chairman) .las. Garcia, and P. Skoglund (secretary). Mesrss S. Paul (starter), Williams and Ryder (judges), J. Bennett, E. Wkitle (timekeepers), and W. H. Moyes also rendered valuable asistance. In each event a standard is set, and 20 points are allotted each | boy that equals it. In addition place '.takers earn extra points. To qualify dor the scholarship, competitors must [obtain at least 80 marks. With the 'place-kicking to come, for which the jmaximum marks are 50 points, the Iscores of the boys who have qualified land who may qualify, are as follow:

Second heat: Lawn (Stratford), 1 ; Carmichael (Patea), 2; Vickers (Stratford), 3. Cocker and Hue (Xew,Plymouth High School), and Stubbs (Eltham) also gained the standard. Time, 12 3-ssec.

Final: CV A. Lawn (Stratford), J; H. Hammond (Hawera), and C. Yates (Now Plymouth), dead heat for second place. A really good "go," being won on the post by inches. Time, 12 2-ssec.

Kelly (New Plymouth High School), 1 ;• C. A. Lawn (Stratford), 2; C. C. Yates (New Plymouth High School). No one gained th~ standard. Another great race.
