COMPENSATION GLAItVL Wellington, December 0. Judgment was lodged in the Court of Arbitration in the ease of Mary Ann Mcintosh v. William Ernest Hughes, a claim for compensation for the lo»s of her son, who was riding the mare Biddy at Blenheim on 21st November,--'"and was thrown, dying from,.;his injuries on the 6th December. Mcintosh, who was aged seventeen, was apprenticed to Pritchard, who stated that Hughes, who owned Biddy, had selected Mcintosh to ride in the race, while Hughes swore that Pritchard had proposed Mcintosh as the jockey, defendant assenting. Justice Sim held, that Mcintosh had remained for all purposes a servant of Pritchard. and that plaintiff was not entitled to recover any compensation from defendant. ALLECED EMBEZZLEMENT. Auckland, December o. Oliver Xoel Gillespie, a solicitor, aged 30. years, was charged in the Police Court to-day that at Feilding, on June 1, lie received £I7OO from the trustees of the estate of James Vile,on terms requiring him to account for it, and that he failed to, account for the money. He was. one of the passengers who worked as a volunteer stoker on the Maheno. He was'arrested yesterday on the ship's arrival at Auckland, from Sydney- Chief-Detective McMahon asked that accused be remanded to appear at Feilding on Wednesday next, no bail being asked for.
