Mr S. Filler, Commissioner of Taxes, is dead, states a Sydney cablegram.
.Dr. T. L. Paget and Mrs Paget returned from Auckland last evening.
Mr Joseph McCluggage returned last night from a short visit to Auckland.
Mr and Mrs A. Jones, of Waipukurau, Hawkes Bay, are paying, a short visit to Stratford.
Mr J. R. L. Stanford arrived in Stratford last evening after spending 'a few weeks in Australia.
Mr Langdon, who is aged 82, has been elected chairman of committees in the Victorian Assembly.
Mr T. W. Leys, editor of the Auckland Star, has arranged to leave New Zealand in January, on a visit to England.
The Hon. J. A. Millar will, it is understood, fit the end of the present session of Parliament take up his residence in Auckland.
Mr A. H. Pearce, of the . Hawera branch of the Public Trust Office, has been promoted to be the officer-in-charge of the New Plymouth Branch, vice Mr A. H. T. Jones, who has been transferred to the Head Office in Wellington.
Mr W. Mathews, scenic artist of the Princess Theatre, Melbourne, arrived'in Stratford last fiight, and will collaborate with Mr Will Diamond, of His Majesty’s, regarding erecting a scenic studio in Stratford for making and painting scenery for all travelling shows and theatres in the Dominion under the personal supervision of Mr Tom Pollard, of opera fame.
A pretty double' wedding took place in the St. Andrew’s Chinch on Tuesday. The parties were Mr Joseph Lister and Miss Lizzie Jamison, and Mr John H. Burgham and Miss Sarah L. Lister. The ceremony was performed by the Her. J. Pattison, and took place in the afternoon in the presence of a group of friends. After the ceremony, the bridal couples drove to the Toko Hall, where a wedding dinner was provided.
Mr Bertie H. T. Prior, of Whangamoraona was - married to Miss Helen Blair of Dannevirke on Wednesday, at the residence of Mr T. E. Hartnell, Whangamomona, the Rev. J. Patison being the officiating minister. A number of relatives and friends were
present. An excellent wedding breakfast was provided, to which all present did justice. Tim happy couple left in the afternoon for their new home 14 miles away.
The nomination of Dr. A. W. Averill, Bishop of Waiapu, as Bishop of Auckland, has been formally approved by the Synod of two of the other five dioceses, and by the Standing Committees of the three remaining. This sanction is required by the constitution of the Church, and now that it has been granted, Dr. Averill is at liberty to assume office forthwith. The Bishop, however, will not take up his residence at Auckland till early in February, when he will be formally enthroned in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Dr. Av'-erill will visit Auckland on Saturda5 r next, returning to Napier on Monday.
Mr G. A. Burgess, who has been promoted to the managership of the
Hawera branch of the Bank of New Zealand after having served eight years as manager of the branch here (states a Press Association message from Pahintua),' left for Hawera this morning. Mr and Mrs Burgess and family, during their stay here, have taken a prominent part ,in the social life of the town and district, Mr Burgess himself having been associated with musical and agricultural affairs, the hospital, school committee competitions, bowling and other institutions. Mr and Mrs Burgess and family were entertained at a complimentary social last evening, when Mr Burgess was presented with a gold watch and Mrs Burgess with a handsome silver epergne. Earlier in the week Mr Burgess was presented with a purse 4 of sovereigns hy town nd country residents.
