THE OPAWft’3 FIREMEN. Wellington; December 1. The Opawa’s firemen, when before the Court, said tuey would refuse duty if placed on board. If was pointed out to the men that they were liable to 12 months’ imprisonment for combining to refuse duty on the high seas. The Magistrate declined to discuss the possibilities with the men, and sentenced them to 14 days’ imprisonment and ordered them to be placed aboard if the vessel left before the expiry of the sentence.

OPAWA BACK TO PORT. . The Opawa sailed for London, but one hour later was seen re-entering the heads. The firemen presumably remained obstinate, and refused to 8 work. WATERSIDERS’ NEW UNION. Auckland, December 1. A large number of members of the old watersiders’ union applied for work on the wharves this morning. Their names were taken by the secretary of the new union, and these will be submitted to ballot by members of the latter. So far, 100 out of 1300 who struck have been reinstated or hare applied for reinstatement.
