Citizens hustled some officers, who called out the guard, the front ranks of w hick knelt and threatened to fire unless the streets were cleared. the crowd fled, and the soldiers used the butt ends of their guns. Forty arrests were made, including two magistrates. The officers are unable to appear in the streets without a guard of fixed bayonets. Unofficial versions accuse the military of violent excesses. The pubhc demand the removal of the 99th regi-

ment. The authorities are much concerned, and have ordered an enquiry.
