DIESEL’S ENGINE.
The presumed tragic death of Dr. Diesel at, sea calls attention once more to the marvel of his oil engine. The form of motor with which Dr. Diesel’s name is associated is one in which the fuel in its original and natural form, v ifhout having previously
undergone any transforming process, is directly epuyerted into work in;the cylinder qf tjie engine,, says, the London Times. Air alone is drawn into the cylinder on the charging stroke, and on the return stroke is compressed to a big pressure, over 4001 b. per sq. in., whereby its temperature is raised to incandescence. Then by means of air still more highly compressed a charge of fuel oil is injected into the cylinder, where it immediately ignites. Properly speaking, there is no explosion; the oil merely Turns, and in sc doing gives the power impulse, without producing pressures in excess of thorof the oil and air injection. Dr. Diesel claimed that his engine securehotter heat utilisation than any other known kind of heat engine.,
