A TRAGEDY RECALLED.
About a year ago two Chinese gardeners in the Northern Territory were killed with spears thrown at them by a number of aborigines. Tlir.ee natives -i-Koppio, Katterinyan, and Anyuanna —were charged with the crime, and the two first-mentioned were found guilty and sentenced-to death. Koppio was hanged in the presence of a number of his fellows, as an■ object lesson; lint Katterinyan escaped. He was, however, subsequently recaptured. As the result of a close investigation into the case, the Minister for External Affairs recommended to .the Federal Executive that the death sentence on Katterinyan should be commuted to imprisonment for life, on the ground that he wajs less culpable than Koppio.
