The death of Lady Strathcona, wife of the High Commissioner for Canada, is announced hy cable. professor Alfred Werner, of Zuiich, has been awarded the Nobel chemistry prize, and Professor Kamarlinch Ouues, of Leyden, the physics prize. The indian poet, Rabindranath lagore, has been awarded the Nobel prize' for literature, states a Stockholm cablegram. The funeral of the late David Crewe, Mayor of Pahiatua, yesterday was very largely attended. The cortege, which was headed by the Pahiatua Town Band, playing the “Dead March,” m•eluded various societies and local bodies. A service was first held at the Anglican Church, and the Foresters’ burial ritual was also read at deceased’s residence and at the grave. Messages of condolence were received from all parts of the Dominion, including those from Mr Massey and Sir Joseph and Lady Ward. —P.A.
