At a meeting of the Dominion Commission, Mr Crabb, second sectary to the Post Office, gave evidence. He
declared that a State cable was unjustified at the present time, and would mean a deficit of £20,000 yearly at existing rates. The Post Office desired to cpnsult the Dominions in every way, hut the rate-cutting by wireless and the possibilities of serious costly breakdowns must be considered. Mr Crabb said he was aware experiments were in progress to keep wireless messages secret. Sir Rider Haggard suggested speeding up the South African steamships by a knot an hour and enabling the Australian mails to call at Capetown as the only port of call. 1 Mr Crabb admitted the proposals worth considering, hut speeding-up would he costly and much business was picked up via Suez.
