| Mr Baeyertz tells a good story abon the Ballarat festival just held. Talking about the unexpected humorous con tributious, he says: This year, for instance, and elderly gentleman caint from somewhere in the Xever-nevei Country, and entered for the humorous recital. He chose “How McDougall Topped the Score*,” and came out or I the stage* with some toy wickets on ' the' O.l*. side* of the* stage, walked somewhat unsteadily to the preempt side*, and placed a single wicket there. Then ho took off his hat, coat and waistcoat, throw thorn down on the stage*, spat on his hands, and proceeded to tell the story. He had a toy bat in his hand, and when be* cam; to the* point when McDougall hit the ball, and the' elog ran off with it, hotly pursued by the opposing fielders, he* has to say “McDougall started running like' a hare,” and tlm old gentleman (more* or less suiting the action to the* word) began to totter to and fro between the* wickets reciting the while. V\ e' could see bis lips moving, but not a word could we hear above the ere'Cemlo of laughter as the* veteran ran thirty-five’ runs, before an audience 1 that became' almost hysterical long bolero the* score was eventually topped.
