u AN ATROCIOUS ASSAULT. [Per Press Association.] Wahi, November 7. A brutal assault, nearly resulting .11 the death of the victim, is reported is having occurred last night, about i. -15, in Rycroft Street, upon a little girl aged eight, years, who resides with her parents in that street. As far as can be gathered, the little girl, who had been on a message to an adjacent fruit shop, was returning home when die was accosted by an unknown man, who offered her lollies. She attempted to run, but states that the man caught hold of her, and, dragging her across, he road, threw her over a fence onj o a vacant allotment, where he knock'd her down, and, as evidences indi-; ■ate, committed a most brutal assault! ipon her. The girl says she attempt'd to cry out, but her assailant caught] her by the throat and choked her into nsensibility. Upon regaining consciousness her terrified screams at-' racted attention. The child was 1 licked up, but immediately collapsed.: flier© were marks and swelling on her throat, indicating that the life had been almost choked out of her. She! vas carried into an adjoining house in' in unconscious state, and Dr. Craig 1 md Seregant Wohlman were soon in ittendance. The child, slowly regain'd consciousness, and this morning had made a fairly good recovery, but vas suffering. ' The police are investigating the occurrence.
