THE MAYFIELD CRIME.
BIDDLE’S CONFESSION , [Per Press Association.] Ashburton, October 28. At the Mayfield murder trial. Detective Sergeant Fahey concluded his evidence hv reading a statement which was signed by Biddle, in which the accused admitted killing deceased. He * said that he did not know why he did it. He had been worried and had called to collect money from Lilley, who was not at home. He then told Mrs Lilley that Airs Montgomery was ill, and wanted her. When walking across the paddock he hit her with the hammer. “As true as Clod is above me I did not do anything else,” said accused. He declined to question any witnesses. On the magistrate’s advice he pleaded.not guilty and reserved his defence. He was committed for trial at Christchurch, on November 17.
