He was not seen again, and meantime the police | have been making inquiries. A lad named Carroll, employed as a cadet on the railway dining ears, sustained a fracture of the skull through striking a tablet exchange post while passing through Tuakan station yesterday afternoon. He was on the mid-day Main Trunk express and was hit violently and thrown back into the carriage. He was taken on to the Hamilton Hospital. A young man, named C. Rouse, a married man, whose wife is residing at Ponsonby, lias been killed at Whitianga while cross-cutting a log, which rolled on him. Wellington, October 27. The boy Martin, who was injured in the collision - between a motor-cycle and a cart, still lies in a critical condition and his chance of recovery is slight. Thames, October 27. Edward Beale, aged 52, a marired man, was killed by a fall of earth in the Tairua district. Deceased was engaged in an excavation contract. He was completely buried and was dead when extricated. Invercargill, October 27. John Gibbs was rabbit shooting on Sunday when the gun of another in the party went off, inflicting a gaping wound in his thigh and shattering the bone. Amputation will probably bo necessary. John Young, a farmer at Mabel Push, was killed by being kicked by a horse in the stomach. On Sunday afternoon Patrick Hughes, a married man with a family, was drowned by the capsizing ol a boat while crossing the New .River. Blenheim, October 27. The wife of Dr. F. Elliott Meade was killed instantaneously in Avondale Road early this morning. A motor car driven by Dr. Meade reached the | top of a steep incline with a sharp turn. The strain on the brake and steering gear caused two wheels to break and the car rolled down the hillside. The doctor was only slightly injured, but bis wife had the base of her skull fractured. Mrs Meade leaves two young children. THE DANGEROUS MOTOR CYCLE. 1 » ‘ 1 rNelson, October 27. A young man, a photographer, named Cameron,' rocontlvi from Blenheim, riding a motor cycle, collided with a " buggy this evening. He was removed 1 to the hospital and his recovery is | doubtful. The body of .John King, a retired Government auditor, was found in the-Maitai river (on Saturday afternoon by a fisherman j .(says a Nelson Press Association telegram.) Deceased, who resided in Shakespeare Walk on the banksi'of the river, went home _j with a companion late on Friday night, leaving him at the Normanby bridge in the darkness. It is surmised that deceased, who is about sixty-seven j years of age, and near-sighted at 'J night, got off the beaten track and stepped over the steep bank into the water. An inquest was held yesterday morning, when a verdict was returned that deceased died from syncope following the effects of a shock canscd by falling into the water.
