THE MOUNTAIN HOUSE.

IMPROVING THE ROAD. Yesterday there was beautiful weather on the mountain, but only a few residents of Stratford made the journey to the House. The means of access is being rapidly improved. The County mud road has been fixed up and is in excellent condition. There are, of course, a few wet patches which will never be satisfactory until they are properly drained, but in reasonable weather the mud road will be as good as can be wished. Work on this stretch as also on the track inside the radius line has been much delayed by the recent wet weather. Mr Williams lias fixed up some of the worst places on the track and a few weeks of fine weather should see it in excellent condition. In this connection, it is to be regretted that a few pounds could not lie spent on the County road for the purpose of putting in drains which would permanently improve the road. The National Park Board' might iwell authorise some expenditure" on the round-the-mountain track'at the point where it enters the Manganui gorge from the Stratford side. At present tin l track is barely safe, and unless a good deal of blasting is done it will never bo satisfactory. The spot is on the route to the summit from the Stratford house, but it should be fixed up for the convenjejJice of visitors to the other houses wdtcemay wish to run j round the mountain)' A fine heifei; was .seen yesterday by j a visitor abPut a mile above the j house in fl’ih Te Popo gorge. So long 1 as it stays there and does not come j up and cut up the tracks nobody will grumble. j
