Ex-King Manoel's wife has recovered, and both have gone to Sigmaring«n, states a cablegram irom Berlin.

Lord Redesdale's son, jo'/in, is engaged to Fraulein Friedlauderfield, the only child of Berlin's Coal King, whose fortune is five millions sterling.— Berlin cablegram.

The examiners at Victoria College, Wellington, have awarded. the Si'' George Grey Scholarship to P .. . Armstrong; proxime accessit, F. H. W. Rowntree.

Mr H. Williams, stationniaster at Gisborne, has' been transferred to Napier as stationmaster. Ho will be succeeded at Gisborne by Mr L. P. Poppell, chief goods clerk at Christchurch.

The elevation of Sir Joshua Williams to the position of Privy Councillor involves an entirely new departure in the relations between New Zea-land-and the Mother Country. By virtue of his appointment, Sir Joshua Williams will terminate his judicial duties in this Dominion and proceed to London and join the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

The death occurred yesterday of Mr Joseph Peckovor, a well-known and greatly respected resident of Gisborne, at the ripe age of eighty-four years (say's a Press Association message). He took a. keen interest in temperance and religious work. He was a much-travelled man, having spent a number of years in South Africa and America. Deceased leaves a widow, who is at present in Wellington.
