A NARROW ESCAPE. ■ - ■ i • Auckland, October 20' A young married man named Ern* est Curtis was admitted to the Auckland Hospital on Saturday evening suffering from the effects of coal gas poisoning. Shortly after 5 p.m. the landlady of the house at which Curtis and his wife were staying, had occasion to go to the bedroom. As soon as she opened the door of the room she was met by the overpowering smell of gas. The window and door of the room had been closed, and the window blind was drawn, and gas was escaping from two jets that were turned full on. Curtis was lying on the bed in an unconscious state. The doctor succeeded in bringing the man to consciousness. Curtis said he did not know how the gas came to he left on.
