VALUELESS CHEQUE CASE.

Palmerston, October 11

Samuel Knight, an able-bodied man who pleaded guilty to nine charges of issuing valueless cheques, came up for sentence before the Chief Justice this morning. He was sentenced to a year on each charge concurrent, and two years’ reformative treatment AH the cheques were issued on publicans. Accused had four previous convictions against him. ,

DIED FROM '“CALF” LOVE.

Auckland, October 11

Alfred Edward Day, aged 17, was found unconscious on the beach at Devonport. Ho was removed to hospital and died an hour later. Day spent last night in town, and on returning home by the ferry steamer, he confided to a companion that his girl had thrown him over. He said he was going to take bis life. His companion, noticing that Day had a bottle of poison and was in a bine mood reported the matter to a constable. A search resulted in Day being found at midnight in a dying condition.
