DUKE CUMBERLAND’S CLAIM.

A sensation has been caused by Ernest, Duke of. Cumberland, refusing the Kaiser’s demand to renounce his
claims to the throne of Hanover. Duke Ernest declared that love only came after honor. The Duke said bis son’s marriage had nothing to do with politics.
Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover, was fifth son of George 111. of Great Britain, He was created Duke of Cumberland in 1799, In 1815 he married a daughter of the Duke of Mccklcnburg-Strelitz. He succeeded to the throne of Hanover in 1837 and died in 1851. Previously Hanover was governed by the Kings of Great Britain, though it did not form part of the Kingdom. Ernest Augustus opposed Prussia in the war with Austria and the Prussians invaded the territory, confiscated the estates of the King and annexed Hanover as a Prussian province. The presents Duke of Cumberland is a grandson of Ernest Augustus, succeeding to the title in 1878. He is a cousin of the late Queen Victoria. He lives now in Austria and consistently advocates his right to the throne of Hanover, though it was thought that the recent marirage of Ins to a daughter of the Kaiser would have reconciled him.
