THE OPUNAKE FIRE. FURTHER DETAILS. The Pihama correspondent of the flawera Star wrote yesterday as follows : The town presents a heart-breaking appearance. . Residents are appalled at their losses, and business is at a standstill. ; The main street is littered with salvage, and sufferers are moving about among the ruins collecting what little was saved. ■'■■ •■■•■■■■"■■ —■• •:::':: Great sympathy is felt for the losers. The damage would have been greater but for the number present at a lance. The fire simply galloped clean through everything, and the sight was awe-inspiring while in progress. THE INSURANCES. The insurances as far a& can be ascertained are as follow: Middleton's Hotel, owned and occupied by Mr Geo. Building owned by Donald McGregor : Insured in the South British office cor £4OO.
Mildenhall's stock: South British office, for £3OO. Cannell's stock: South British office, for £3OO. Aiken's stock: No insurance. Building owned by Breach, and occupied by W. C. Dudley: Building, I £l3O, in the London and Lancashire 'office; 6tock unknown. Building owned by Beach, and occupied by Mrs Nicoll as tea rooms: £l5O m the building in the London and Lancashire office, and £25 on the dock in the State office. •Buildings owned by Mrs Aspagne, md occupied by F. "Watson and L. E. Jackson: Said to be uninsured. Building owned by C. Jeffries, and occupied by Holmes and Arthur: Build|ing insuied for £470, in the Queensland office, and stock, etc., for £1650, in the National office. Building occupied b" W. C. Dudley, and occupied by Mart'n Heath as a furniture shop: Insurance on the building unknown. Heath msured for £205 in the Northern office. ,
HOUSE DESTROYED. [Peb Press .Association.] Cliristchurch, October 2. A nine-roomed two-storey house, situated in Thackeray Road, Belfast, was completely destroyed by fire at four o'clock this morning. The inmates of the house were aroused by the barking of a dog in the passage of the house, and only escaped in the clothes they were wearing. The building was jowned by Mrs Ycigers, and occupied by Mr G. Anson, who had shiftpd into the dwelling only two days previously.
