LEADS TO A MAN’S DEATH.
GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER.
By Electric Telegraph—Copyright 1 [United Press association.l Sydney, October 1. .Merry Held was found guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on the ground of good character, of the manslaughter of KefTord. A statement made by Merriiield showed that Kefford, opposed a proposal to admit third partner to the market garden or dissolving partnership. Merrifiek! fired an explosive with the object of frightening Kefford and convincing him that he was in earnest. He . did not think that Kefford was in the wrecked room.
A Sydney cablegram, dated August 9, said: Walter Merrifield was committed. for trial at Newcastle on a charge of having-murdered his partner Clarence Kefford, who- was killed through an explosion of gelignite in the room where he was sleeping. Merrifield told the police that he caused the explosion with' the object o frightening Kefford, believing he wa‘ absent from the room.
