Phillippe Buena Varilla, a-former engineer on the Panama Canal under Do Lesseps, in an interview, said that tiio Canal would re-maKe the map of North America. The tendency ol civilization was over westward, and the population was sure to shift towards the Pacific Coast.
Vavilla thought that as the traffic would be great it would be necessary to lower the canal level to that of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans in order to secure freedom from obstructions which were likely U) arise from the use of locks.

At the British Association meeting Sir Oliver Lodge declared that the construction of the Panama Canal would have been impossible without biological research resulting in the destruction of the microbe of malaria, making the Canal zone as healthy as New' York.
