AMUSEMENTS.

THE COUNTRY GIRL

A pretty and sparkling piece, admirably done, was the unanimous verdict of the crowded audience that visited Che Theatre Royal, New Plymouth, to witness the concluding performance of "A Country Girl," given by the New Plymouth Operatic Society. The performance went with a vim and sparkle right through, and the performers, especially those taking the principal parts, achieved even greater success than they did either in "Dorothy" or "Geisha." The chorus singing ind the dancing are really excellent, and the ballet introduced after the opening chorus in Act 11. being quite up to J. C. Williamson standard. Entirely new scenery has been painted or the production, and it strikes one is being almost too elaborate when it ; s remembered that it is only to bo used for a few nights. The scenery for "The Geisha" was universally acknowledged last year to be a triumph, but Mr A. W. Bradbury, the Society's scenic artist, has certainly surpassed himself in any of his previous efforts. Act I. is a Devonshire landscape and Act 11. shows the interior if the Ministry of Fine Arts, which is a fine piece of workmanship. A special train is to leave New Plymouth at 5.35 p.m. for Stratford, stopping where i-equired, and will return after the performance. This should prove a groat opportunity for country people to witness this spectacular and charming opera. Box plans open at Grubb's on Monday morning next at 9 a.m. Country patrons booking will bo reserved in the order received.
