PUBLICAN'S GRIEVANCE.
During the hearing of a case at Mangawheka, in which the licensee of the local hotel was prosecuted for allowing his chimney to catch fire, the defendant alleged that ho was being unfairly treated by the local policeman, states tiie Wanganui correspondent of the Otago Daily Times. In reply to Mr Haselden, S.M., the policeman admitted that he had not warned the licensee that he was going to enforce the new by-laws, and added that if the licensee was not satisfied he could report him (the constable) to the inspector, whereupon the Magistrate said that he was quite capable of dealing with the matter himself. There was, he said, an impression that the publican was being "baited," and on looking up the court records Mr Haselden referred to three previous trivial cases, in which he felt convinced there was, something in it. A nominal penalty of Is was imposed.
