THE RUGBY CAME. WELLINGTON <8) v. TARANAKI (0) [Per Press Association.] Wellington, August 23. Wellington and Taranaki met today for the twenty-first- 'time, Wellington scoring their elevnth win. The Taranaki team was not the same which met Auckland, Stohr, .Roberts and Cain being absent. At the last moment Cain was unable to play on account of an injured ankle. In the absence of Roberts Mevdi replaced Loveridge on the left, wing,, MeLeod took Roberts' place as first, fiveeighth, Whittington took Cain's place in the front rank, and Pini took the former's place in the back,rank. The ground was very wet, but the gameprovided a fairly fast forward display. The back play was never spectacular. Wellington, kicked off with a light breeze against them. Taranaki seemod to have the opposition well in hand, and neither'set of backs seemed, disposed to risk much passing with the greasy ball. Loveridge put in a good run and Brown marked from a scrummage near the touch-line. Hawkins took the kick, at a difficult angle, and just missed scoring. After Taranaki had staved off a good number of Wellington attacks Tamu and Whittington worked their way o\(er the •Wellington .line, , Whittingtoh just failing on the touch-down. Half-time was- sounded without any score being registered. Taranaki opened up the second spell ,vith an endeavour to open up the beck play. After Taranaki had been i'orced on several occasions McKay got over for Wellington, Paton converting.—Wellington 5, Taranaki 0. Auckland 'Once more demonstrated their right to the Northern Union Cup this afternoon by beating Wellington. This match was played in the presence of about 8000 spectators, and was by far the best seen here tin's season. Wellington played a great game from beginning to end, were extremely unfortunate to lose by a single point. Right from the whistle they attacked.
